From Dream to Legacy: The Story of American Iron Speed-n-Cycle in Frederick, Maryland

How American Iron Speed-n-Cycle Got Its Start

American Iron Speed-n-Cycle was built from a real passion for motorcycles, hard work, and a love for the American V-Twin lifestyle. Former owner Chris Beall said his journey started when he was young, first riding as a kid, then buying his first Harley-Davidson® around age 21. Like many riders, he was hooked.

Over the years, Chris spent time buying, selling, and working on bikes while also running his concrete business. During the custom chopper era of the late 1990s and early 2000s, motorcycles became an even bigger part of his life. After spending time around smaller local shops, he knew he wanted to own one himself someday. When the opportunity came, he took the leap.

The Early Challenges That Shaped the Shop

The early days of American Iron Speed-n-Cycle were anything but easy. Chris had a hard time finding a location in Frederick that would allow a motorcycle shop. When he finally found one, it was bigger than planned, but he decided to go all in. With the help of family and friends, he got the shop ready and opened with a major grand opening event featuring live music, vendors, and local radio.

Business picked up quickly, but so did the pressure. A business partner unexpectedly left just a few months after opening, forcing Chris to regroup fast. Instead of giving up, he downsized, leaned on a few true friends, and kept pushing forward. That perseverance helped lay the foundation for what American Iron would become.

A Reputation Built on Honesty and Friendship

When asked what mattered most while building the shop, Chris pointed to honesty and treating customers like friends. That mindset helped create a loyal customer base and lasting relationships over the years. For Chris, one of his proudest accomplishments was proving doubters wrong, living the dream of owning a bike shop, and seeing American Iron continue after his time as owner.

Why Greg Fielder Took Over American Iron

Current owner Greg Fielder came into American Iron at a turning point in his life. After years of physically demanding work in welding, heavy equipment, and truck repair, he was ready for something different. In 2018, a friend told him the shop was for sale and connected him with Chris.

The moment Greg stepped into the shop, he knew it was where he belonged. Even without money or credit, he was determined to make it happen. He described it as finding his new home.

Moving American Iron Forward While Honoring Its History

Greg’s vision for American Iron Speed-n-Cycle was clear from the start: build a respected motorcycle shop known for integrity, unmatched workmanship, and quality control. He also saw the shop as a place to preserve the history of the American V-Twin machine.

Today, Greg’s priorities include building a strong team, improving communication between the shop and its customers, and developing relationships within the community and the industry. At the same time, he remains committed to the shop’s roots. He promised Chris he would never embarrass the brand, kept the logo close to its original identity, and never considered taking American Iron out of Frederick.

American Iron Speed-n-Cycle is more than a motorcycle shop. It is a story of grit, passion, legacy, and a shared commitment to doing things the right way.
