Spring Motorcycle Maintenance Checklist for Harley-Davidson® & American-Made V-Twin Riders
For some Maryland riders, there is no such thing as an “off-season.” If you’ve been braving the cold all winter, we respect it. But whether your Harley-Davidson® or American-made V-Twin has been sitting or still seeing miles, early spring is the perfect time to give it a proper once-over.
Here’s a practical checklist to help you start the season strong.
1. Battery & Charging System
Cold weather drains batteries quickly. If your bike sat for weeks at a time, test the voltage and check for corrosion at the terminals. Slow starts and dim lights are warning signs. A quick charging system check now can prevent getting stranded later.
2. Tires & Tire Pressure
Temperature swings affect tire pressure more than most riders realize. Check:
- Tire pressure (to spec)
- Tread depth
- Uneven or cupped wear
- Dry rot
Proper pressure improves handling, braking, and tire life. If you’ve put miles on cold pavement, it’s worth taking a close look.
3. Fluids
Fresh oil protects internal engine components, especially after sitting through winter. Check oil condition, brake fluid levels, and coolant (if applicable). Clean fluids equal smoother performance and longer engine life.
4. Brakes
Spring roads can still be damp and unpredictable. Make sure brake pads have life left in them, and levers feel firm. Any grinding, pulsing, or squealing should be addressed before peak riding season.
5. Belts, Cables & Controls
Inspect drive belts for cracks and check cable movement for smooth operation. Throttle and clutch controls should respond cleanly without sticking.
6. Lights & Electrical
Headlights, brake lights, and turn signals are critical for visibility—especially with more traffic back on the road as the weather improves.
